Sherman Robertson – Takin’ You To Texas’ – JSP5808
Blues News – Germany – April 2016
Sherman Robertson ‘Takin You To Texas’ (JSP5808 – 74:15) is a Texas blues party with Sherman Robertson and his band playing a gig in England. The British JSP label has found another treasure from the Blues Archive collection founded by Paul Reed, Bob Webber and Amanda Palmer with this concert recorded at Blues On The Farm Festival in Chichester, England in 1999 where Sherman Robertson is joined by Robert Parker (bass), Jason West (drums) and Bobby DeVito (second guitar).
Born in the Mississippi Delta but raised in Texas, Robertson wants his blues, as he explains in one of the interviews on the DVD, to be happy just like a Texas Blues Party.
Standout tracks are “Cold Shot “a shuffle, a grooving blues, “I Wanna Boogie” and “Red House”
a slow burning blues. The five songs are divided by interviews from the artist leaving the performance at 45 minutes. An interview with legendary record producer Mike Vernon and two interviews with Robertson in 1995 and 1999 complete the lineup.
Perhaps it might have been better to see the performance without Robertson speaking inbetween the tracks because here is a great show of powerful Texas blues, showcasing him as a very accomplished singer. The performance is captured with quality images and sound and overall this DVD is well worth taking time to check out.
